    neutral RPM

What do you guys reckon the neutral RPM should be on a 1996 Johnson 150 faststrike?

You could probably rev it up high enough in neutral to blow the motor.

What should the RPM's be at idle in the water and warmed up.

~650-750 in gear and ~900 in neutral.

    Re: neutral RPM (FloridaNative)

Just had my motor rebuilt. New OIS, stator, trigger, and flywheel. When i start the boat in the water cold or warm the RPM's will be up around 1400. They'll eventually come down to 1100 then down to 900. When i put it in gear they would go down to 850 or so. The RPM's seem really high to me for neutral. Any advice or help is appreciated.

They'll stay up until the T's stats open, if not try and disconnecting your Quickstart sensor. It is on the cylinder head, it is the white wire with black trace.

Is 1400 or 1100 too high shift into gear. It makes me too nervous to shift into gear at such a high rpm

Yes let the motor come up to normal temp once it comes out of High Idle and drops in to the 8XX range it will be OK to shift. If you are overly concerned have your rebuilder recheck the timing. I'd try disconnecting the quickstart wire first.

Thanks Championman your very knowledgeable and a big help. My first thought was timing but I'll try the qiuckstart idea first. Called the guy who rebuilt it 4 times and left messages. No answer, no return call. Can I do anything to adjust the timing or do i need the ignition analyzer.

You set the idle speed in gear, not neutral, and that should be about 650 to 750 rpm. The idle speed adjustment linkage varies the idle timing to get the rpm you want. The carb throttle plates have to be completely closed. If they are not synchronized to move together and are not fully closed at idle, your rpm will be higher than normal. Also an airleak anywhere in the intake system can do the same thing.

    Re: neutral RPM (ChampioNman)

I checked the quickstart and its working properly. I noticed the primer solenoid leaking fuel from behind the red valve. Gonna replace it tomorrow, could that in any way be causing my issue. Still cant get a hold of my rebuilder I guess I'm gonna have to take it somewhere to have the timing checked.

That's a common problem, and the parts are cheap, be sure to get a new oring also. See if that fixes it first.
