Pickwick Lake-
April fishing forecast-
Things are progressing a little faster than usual on Pickwick this year. Providing we don’t get a major arctic cold front we could have 65 degree water by the first of the month on the river. We have some warm (68.5) water right now in the backs of creeks but the river is still cool approx 59 yesterday. There are some bass, mostly males moving shallow and we have a few bedding fish (3/21/12. The water on the river is extremely clear for this time of year, which should help the grass growth. There will be more and more fish moving towards the banks all through the month of April. Shallow running crankbaits, spinnerbaits and plastics should do the trick. If you haven’t tried the Strike King KVD 1.0, 1.5 & 2.5 crankbaits you are missing out on something. Red Eye shads in ½ and ¾ oz will put some fish in the boat as well. There should be some good topwater action as well I have started seeing schools of shad working the shallow warmer waters in the past few days. Texas rigged Game Hawgs caught most of our fish yesterday. We had about 40 head 3.5 lb being the largest.
. This is probably the best time to Crappie fish on Pickwick. We are nearing the middle of March and the guys fishing deep 12-20’ are really catching them. By the time this article comes out the Crappie should be headed to bank as well. Catfish are starting to show up on some of our Bass fishing areas. We’ve caught several big ones on artificial lures this week. Please wear your lifejacket when running your boat!
