LOLI was thinking about down riggers for some smallies.
Beware Houghton Lake water has bee dropped 2 feet in the recent weeks. So it is almost impossible to fish anything but main lake structure. I would recommend fishing and area known to locals as "the middle ground" big weedy flat in the center of the lake close to deep water, fish move in and out constantly. You most likely will see some boats fishing it(mostly the bass guys) I would fish it with a drop shot (Ishad) or a jig with a small tube or grub. There are good bass there. Otherwise if you are looking for smallies look for the walleye guys and sort of work yourself in the pack of them drifting or trolling, the smallies are mixed in with walleyes. A berkley gulp leech works well when dragged. Hope this helps.
