Fished the Red today, what do you want to know?
How did ya do ? Me and Chris will be down there in Oct. for a large tourney just looking for a little info. What pools did you fish and what did you catch?

We've "spoken" already about the tourney. I'll be glad to keep you updated as the time comes nearer.
I was in pool 4 on Saturday. My buddy and I caught 22 bass, almost all of them on shallow grass beds with nearby deeper water using weightless flukes. Fished pool 5 the week before and only caught 2 bass all day. There were many more anglers in the northern section. However, the lower pool will be a long haul from Stoner, but it will be the same for everyone else also.
What type of rig are you running? From Stoner, it would take me about 30 mins to get to lock and dam #5, and that's running 70+ in my Gambler. To get through the lock would take another 15-20 minutes, then another 15-30 minutes to get to the fishing in pool 4. What's the date again? I just want to make sure that I'm nowhere near the Red that weekend!
Do you have any idea where you can get good maps of the red river? I've fished everywhere else but the red, because I dont know where to fish it. Heard good talk about the river and would like to give it a try.
There is a "book" that i believe that the Corps of Engineer puts out. It is about $25. It has black and white aerial photos on one sheet and a colored drawing on the following of the same area. On the colored drawing it shows the rock dikes, rock walls and utilities along with the names of the areas. Really nice. It starts just north of Shreveport and ends at the Mississippi. Someone that used to work at the office left it in his desk drawer. I may have to claim it. Also there are a few places on the internet that you can download aerial photos of the state for free. The only thing is that if you want a full size print (22"x34") you need a BIG printer. The reason know this is cause a work we have a big HP color printer.therefore i make my own color aerial maps. Granted they don't have any landmarks or identifications but it works for what i need. I believe that there is a website for the red river book. I'll find it and post if you are still want it.

I can buy maps at pretty much any local store that sells tackle; Wal Mart, Academy, Bass Pro....So I would imagine that they would be available online somewhere. I can look in my boat tomorrow to see if the publisher has a web address.
I am running a 19ft basscat with a 200 on it run about 68 with 2 guys and full load and gas. I know it is 25 miles to the lock from stoner. Who knows, I am not sure if I am going to lock or not but if I do lock then i will not even fish pool 5 it will either lock or do not lock for me.

Makes sense to me (lock or not).
How much practice are you guys going to get?
If time permits, I might be able to fly you guys over the river to look at potential fishing spots. I'll have to see as time gets closer.
Here's the web address that is on my Red River map.

They have quite a few maps available around Louisiana and neighboring states. The maps are waterproof and have GPS coordinates on them. All in all a nice product.
Good Luck!
Well we get three days on the water. 2-4 is practice and the tourney is 5-7. I might get down there the weekend of the 10-11th for some scouting if I do I might lock but other wise there is just so much back water and main river stuff I want to get to I will either stay if pool 5 and find dish or stay in pool 4 and find fish.

Update for you:
I fished yesterday AM, caught 10, but all were very small. Only one keeper in the bunch. I was fishing the main channel along various rip-rap and several laydowns. Most of the fish were caught early. Quite a few schoolers. I caught them on a Texas rigged flukes (3) and on silver colored cranks (7).
Club event Nov 5th out of Clark's Marina... never fished it before... will fish p.m. Thurs and a.m. Friday before... any tips, etc appreciated as far as areas where bass have been active since the kool front Oct 22... basic baits and time to reach areas, thanks... reelman@cableone.net
