    More Lake Ouichita questions

What kind of pattern(s) should I expect to encounter on this lake in late October? Do I need to pack a parka? I'm already planning on stocking up on light flourocarbon lines. I guess I can invest in 1 L/C Pointer. I'll probably stock-up on small jigs too. Am I missing anything? Thanks for the help.

No parka needed in October, should still be hitting 80's during the day. They could be hitting everything from topwater frogs in the shallows to carolina rigs out deep. There will be alot of patterns to work on that time of year, just according to how cool it is getting at night that time of year. If it stays hot, it will probably be a deep water deal, if it is getting cool, then you may not be able to do anything wrong.

Be sure to bring the old staples: a football jig, a Carolina-rigged lizard and a Texas-rigged worm.

A good jacket.......it WILL be a cool morning takeoff in late October. Pretty crystal clear water, chunk rock mountain sides, standing timber, moss beds, long taper points, creek channels. The guys are right on, a cooling lake will heat things up.

Ok, I'll leave the parka at home, but I'm taking my heavy Ranger jacket. I may need some more football heads. I only have a few. I'll probably pack everything else I have. I don't want to wish I had something.

What are some good smallmouth baits? If I get a limit early enough, I may want to fish for smallmouth. I've never caught one. The rules say that we must release any smallmouth we catch. I just want to catch one and take a pic real quick, then let it go.

If you want a good shot at a smallie, hit me up in October, I live about two hours North of Ouachita. We can hit Greers Ferry and catch some.

Try some Gitzits (tubes) for the smallies! Jigs will also do it.

What do you mean smallmouth must be released? You can't take them to the weigh-in?

Remember that jerk bait I mentioned? Here are a few of the fish (LM and Kentuckies) from my last trip to Lake Ouachita this past March. You can see that lure in one of the pics. With the exception of one nice LM caught on a jig, all the rest of the fish I caught were caught on that Luckycraft:

I think all smallies caught on Ouachita have to be released immeadiatly.

I don't think I'll have enough time for a trip up there. If I get up there early, I may have time for a quick road trip before the tournament. It just depends on how long it takes me to drive up there. It sounds like fun though. I really want to catch a smallie. Normally, we would be allowed to weigh-in smallmouth. For some reason, we have to release them on this lake. There might be some rules on this particular lake that say the smallmouths have to be released. I just want a pic of me holding my first bronze back.

So, yall have Kentuckys up there too? I don't think I've ever caught one of those either. I've caught a bunch of spots before, but they were the Guadulupe version.

If you can make it, the fish should be heating up on Greers, Smallies, Kentuckies, and Largemouth will be feeding pretty good. Just stay in touch with me.

Yep, there are Spots in Lake Ouachita. Here's one my partner caught on our trip there last March.

I will be staying in touch. I want to be as prepared as possible.

That's a nice spot. I hope I catch one of those too. The Guadulupes don't get that big, but they are pretty mean and fun to catch. Do the spots up there bite the same lures as largemouth?

Yeah, you can catch em on alot of the same stuff, during spring when they are all moved up, you will catch em in the same spots alot. Our kentucks are very aggresive most of the time.

Yeah, pretty much the same lures as LM, but the Spots usually run pretty deep in the winter months. Around here in the cold winter months (Dec/Jan/Feb), you can catch them on spoons or dropshots in anywhere from 40' to 60' of water. This is where a high-quality sonar unit comes in very handy.
