    1991 Evinrude Spitfire 150hp Motor?

Hi, I am looking at getting a 91 Evinrude Spitfire 150hp and was wondering if I should run or is it worth getting? The guy selling it says that it will rev up in neutral but when you go into forward gear it tops out at 40mph and at 3500rpm. I am asumming that it is the rings? I am not worrried about have to rebuild the motor just wondering if it is worth buying the motor? He is wanting $500 .. pretty cheap investment hopefully. I have not done a compression check on it yet.

    Thanks, Justin

there great engines, it could be the powepack if it wont get above 3500rpm's id do a compression check 1st, then a good decarb, then look at the powerpack. if the compression isnt good then you pretty much know its in need of a re-build. if the compression is good, decarb it and throw a new powerpack on her and go.

Ok, thanks for the responses. I no evinrude makes great motors but wasnt sure on this specific model. Anything else to be aware of on the motor? He says it has a 25" lower unit... So I can either jack my plate way high or replace the mid section... right? Thanks again.

You'll have to max out the jack plate to get the motor close to height and being that high on the transom you could have a chance to put extra stress (flex) on the transom.

Yes you could you would need a 20" drive shaft and shift rod to match.
