evinrude 150hp rpm?

my 92 or 93 based on the look 150hp evinrude got hot last year and ever since then will cut out about mid rpm range. But only when in gear it seems. I noticed that the part on top of the motor with wires going into a rubber fill or seal doesn't look right. the rubber is raised and seemed to have melted. i believe this is the power pack or regulator, same thing? O know i should replace this but does that part control rpm like that? could someone please help me? thanks! [IMG][/IMG]

That is the regulator and should be replaced as they can catch fire. It don't control rpms,per se. BUT if you're not getting enough juice.........

I should say that the alarm for the temp. is always sounding now. I was reading about this motor and found that the rpm can be regulated if the temp is to hot. whos to say that if the part is bad and that the motor THINKS it's hot and really isn't. am i right about this? i have no clue!!!!!

what is the regulators function? what does it regulate?

Ok being that my motor got hot enough to damage some parts. should i be checking for other problems too? compression? anything at all. asuming the motor will work fine with the new parts, (regulator, thermostat and wire.) some please give me some advice, thanks!

Because the motor got hot and now the regulator doesn't look right, get a knowledgeable technician to remove the flywheel and inspect the stator for melted insulation. If he (or she) finds a pool of plastic under the stator, replace it no matter how it tests.

Did you have wing nuts on the battery at one time?

type in the words wing nuts into the search section of this forum for more info on why not to use them.

No i have not use any wire nuts. Heat was do to weeds clogging and wasn't able to get enough water to cool. i shut it down right away after the alarm sounded. the wires against the motor melted and the regulators rubber melted as well. i have stated the motor after that and runs good other than the rpms seem to max out around 2500 to 3000. the motor bounces back brum brum brum brum, like its governed. defenatly a sencor thing. not enough voltage maybe? regulator is visually shot! what do you thinK?
