    May be a dumb question...

Does a lighter setup usually equal more sensitivity? I have found that my lighter setups are much more sensitive than my heavier ones. I am upgrading a reel just because I think it is too heavy. Is this being too picky? I feel less stress on my wrist with a lighter reel especially. Any comments?

I think a lighter rod and reel does make for a more sensitive set up. A lighter set up also makes a day on the water much more enjoyable. A properly balanced set up also helps.

Well got my first micro guide today and WOW they are much lighter. On another setup I'm upgrading from a 8.3oz reel to a 6.7oz. The 8.3oz just made the setup unenjoyable and made the rod much less sensitive. Compared to another combo that I have a 6.7oz reel on I just could stand it.

Haha is that your guess for what reel I am getting? I'm assuming because it is too 6.7 ounces. Actually I just had a Quantum Smoke and a Lew's Tournament Speed Spool...both on similar Dobyns rods. I sold the Tournament Speed Spool and am upgrading the Tournament Pro. It happens to be 6.7 ounces like the Premier actually.

Remember that their are tradeoffs you need to decide on....sometimes light won't give you the power you need...you should have a balanced arsenal to chose from depending on techniques and conditions. If you want light look at JDM Daiwa

Well I have been using my smoke reel with my dobyns for carolina rigging. It has had more than enough power to handle some big ones.

I would love some JDM Daiwa's just too much money.

Sometimes ... but not always. A combination of light weight and proper action for the bait & line used is a big factor, as is the handle composition and design. Given two identical blanks, guides, handles, and actions, there "might" be a little advantage to a 1oz or so difference. Of course, when you get into heavy, unbalanced rods they are never going to be sensitive. I currently have 2 Loomis IMX844 rids that I built that are definitely not what I would call "light", but they are 2 of the most sensitive rods that I own because they were built to balance properly with the 4500s that are on them. Many factors go into sensitivity.
