I am looking to pick up a jerkbait rod. I am trying to decide between a Powell Glass Crank 703 and a Dobyns 704. Would like to know the good and bad of each rod if any. Thanks for any input.

havent used the powell rod that you have mentioned, but i do own the dobyns 704. the dobyns 704 is my go to jerkbait rod it just has the right action for many jerkbaits especially vission 110 jerkbaits. I use to use a heavier rod for my vission 110s and it didnt really give them a good action it more or less pulled the bait straight through the water the 704 has just the right subtle action to work these baits. This being said i would not use the 704 for heavy jerkbaits like pointer 128s or something of that nature these will overpower the rod.
I dont fish a lot of jerkbaits but Gary Dobyns has won lots of boats and $ and the 704cb if the rod he designed and uses for staysee and pointer 78s. There is a sweet you tube video of him talking about it, on westernbass.com. check it out. As noted above, if you go heavier might want the 705 cb or 705 cb glass

I am a pretty tall guy 6'1" and I have trouble with a 7' rod with a jerkbait yes they give you a little longer cast but I beat the side of the boat pretty bad so I started using a 6'8" or a 6'5" both falcon cara jerkbait rods
I've fished jerkbaits on both the Dobyns 704cb and the 684cb (if you prefer a shorter rod), The rods fish very much the same the only minor difference between the two other than the 4" is the 684cb fishes just a little stiffer/faster action than the 704CB.
Both rods are great and versatile i.e small cranks, poppers, staysees, pointers, Sammy's etc.
Check out the link below to Gary Dobyns video on jerkbait rods and if I'm not mistaken all of Gary's dealers carry demo rods so contact your local Dobyns dealer grab a couple demo rods and go out and play till you find what you like.

I don't fish the rods but I heard quite a few guys around here are getting the 684
I don't have a Dobyns dealer close by so getting one to demo is about out of the question.
I use the Dobyns champion 684cb for all jerk bait duties from xd78's to pointer 112's. The rod is very light and has the perfect amount of tip to throw a wide variety of lure sizes and enough action to allow you to land big fish on light line. My friend just ordered one after seeing how well it balances out and how light it is. When the water warms up it makes a great small top water rod as well.

I'm 6'3 and have trouble with the 7' rod for jerking. I know its not what your looking for but Denali makes a 6'8" jerkbait special that works really nice.
I use a Dobyns 705CB graphite when using baitcasting, and a Falcon Lowrider LFC-4-17 when using spinning.
I like my rod a little more stouter because I fish my jerkbaits aggresively, only because 90% of the time I'm fishing for smallies with them, and Erie smallies like them aggresive!
I use spinning alot up on Erie because of the extra distance I get in the cast when fishing in a little wind.

I'll use a 7M Quantum Superlite spinning rod or a 6'8M Kistler Mg casting rod.
