    Braided line troubles

I have started using braid a little more in my arsenal and like the way it feels, strength, etc but I do have a problem sonetimes with casting it. When I put a good whip into my cast I often get the dreaded thump of the line backlashing before the cast even gets started. I have played around with different reels and use a mono backing but can't seem to get the line not to do this. I want to have long smooth casts but can't consistently get them. Any tips?

    Re: Braided line troubles (whitetailbasser)

I don't use a backer, I tape the line to the spool, with electrical tape, wind on about half a spool, add another strip of electrical tape, to keep the first half compact on the spool, wind on the rest to about an eight of an inch to the edge of the spool, and the keyword is as tight as possible, but, when it starts doing that to me I repack the top half. I Hope that helps.

Re: Braided line troubles (Finesse Basser)

Are you using the braided line on a spinning setup? If that is the case...there is your problem. Braided line just does not buy you the casting distance that you get on baitcasting gear. And if you are using the line with baitcasting gear you shouldn't be using anything less than 30-40 lb test.

Mono backer is ALWAYS a good idea when using braid. It saves you money in the long run and prevents water from dry rotting the line if you have it on there for a long period of time (more than a year)

    Will,

This is good info here. When I spool up with braid, I usually slightly overfill my reel, then I tie the line off to a stationary object and walk all the line back off across the yard. Then I will reel it all back on while slowly walking back to where I tied it off, being sure to keep a lot of tension on the line, thus packing the line on tight. If you don't slightly overfill your reel and then pack the line tight, you may not have a full reel when you get done.

That may be my problem. i dont use anything litghter than 30# and only use baitcasters but I am not making sure it is very tight on the spool. Thanks guys I'll try it!
