Tin for jig molds instead of lead

I was talking to someone last week and they said to use Tin for pouring in your molds to get a lighter weight. Supposedly Tin has about the same melting point as lead.

Where in the world do you get some tin material? I suppose it would work in a DO-IT mold just like lead.

The melting point for tin is lower than lead. Allot of commercial jig heads these days have tin in them. The Owner shakey heads have allot of tin in them, you can melt them with a lighter if you are not careful. Because the melting point is low you have to be careful when doing powder paint and I think this is why the Owner heads are mostly unpainted. They make shiney heads though.

Re: Tin for jig molds instead of lead (STRETCH1)

Someone posted a link in my thread to a place called rotometals?

As for the melting point tin is like 400degrees, bismuth is about 500, and lead is something like 700. In really light weights a lighter can melt tin, I know because I did it trying to powdercoat a 1/16oz shakeyhead so be careful.

From my research most of the non-lead jigheads are a mixture of tin and bismuth but I cannot find a standard ratio. If you find out anything post it and I will do the same.
