    Sponors vs non-sponsors

A couple threads caught my attention about rod repair / board sponsors.

By all means if you can take advantage of a board sponor's craftsmanship go for it.

Not so long ago, a simple guide replacement thread would have been followed by DIY instructions/tips and "just ask and we'll walk you through it" responses.

On the other hand, finding a local builder makes "cents" for replacing a single guide or two for the non-DIY members. It's just not cost effective to ship.

I got in a big piss'n contest on a another site a while back for offering to do a repair for a guy, who just happens to live less than 6 miles from me. It cost him a football jig and a "spot" to fish it.

Getting back on track here, I think it would be nice to get back to helping more and sharing information more than "send it to a board sponsor." Let's face it, those who are willing to do business will do business. Others, either can't afford to, or it's the not worth the cost to cover $50 in shipping for something than costs less than $5 to complete.

On the other hand, it's not cool to offer your paid services and try to undercut a board sponsor either. If you want to compete, then pay to play.

And yes, several years ago, I was gulity as hell of doing that myself on a couple other sites. You can justify it to yourself all you want, but in the end you'll realize you were wrong.

All that said, if anyone has rod building questions, please ask. I don't get on here as often as I like, but if you give me a heads up via e-mail I'll come along as soon as I can. And if I can't, there is quite a bit of knowledge on here to solve anything you can come up with.

Re: Sponors vs non-sponsors (PA Officer)

I still want to come down one weekend for some rodbuilding lessons. There are at least 10 blanks sitting in my basement waiting on me to get started.

It'll be another couple weeks, before I'll have a free weekend. But just start pestering me. We can go hit the river while the rods are on the dryer.

I have the Flex Coat video and some other one so I know some of the basics. The problem is the videos say to space guides using a similar length rod and only show how to use pre-made handle grips. The two things I need to learn is how to do guide spacing based on the specific blank and how to do the no foregrip.

I think we don't have to get back to helping as far as I can see we basically have never left it, that being said I believe the thread your talking about has issues that have gotten out of hand and I'll leave it at that.
