    250 e-tec vs. 250 xs

Guys not to be rude but what yall think about the comparison between a E-Tec 250 and a Merc 250 xs when it comes to power? Gas consumption? I have a Jonny but really love the sound of a Merc, but have heard bad things bout them but I know some of them really make some power??

    Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs (Travis)

You only get a 2 year warranty with the XS and it only takes premium gas and premium plus oil, ETEC warranty is longer and runs on reg gas. I think the XS might put out more hp but it comes at a cost!! I am sure some of the rude guys will be able to give you more info!!

    Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs (nc521vx)

I'm a firm believer in what BRP has done with Evinrude and truely believe they are the best overall motors on the market. With that said, you can't really compare these two motors. The Mercury motor is built by the Mercury Racing portion of Brunswick Marine. It is a great motor for what it is built for, and would be the fastest between the two motors you mentioned. The 250 E-Tec, although used in bassboat applications, shines the most on larger offshore style boats (just my opinion) because of the way all of that torque helps carry those larger boats. The lower unit on the 250 E-Tec does not support high speed applications very well--which is exactly what that 250XS loves. The E-Tec is a cleaner motor (cleanest of any motor, 2 or 4 stroke), quieter, will get better gas mileage, burn less oil, run on 87 octane gas, have a longer warranty (my 225 H.O. E-Tec is covered until 04/2012), no break-in period, no scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 300 hours, doesn't have to be taken to a shop to be winterized......get the picture.

So, who would win a race on a Bullet.....the Mercury hands down. Which would be the better overall motor......my vote goes to the Evinrude.

The E-Tec makes gobs of torque and would beat the 250XS out of the hole, but the top-end just isn't there. If you swap the lower unit out on the 250 E-Tec with the one on a 225 H.O., you gain 3-4 mph. KennethALBassr has done this so I know the improvements are accurate.

Hope this helps to answer your question. If I can do anything else, let me know.

With the above said, that why you buy the 225ho e-tec.It has the same power as the 250 & comes with the faster lower unit.

    Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs (Travis)

The 250XS is a good motor and may be faster on a light hull but, as posted, Premium fuel only, two years of Warranty.....And that Damn break in, how many hours is that again....riding around slow and changing the RPM every 15 minutes, I think the fuel consumption would go high on the XS, it will use a bunch more at any given RPM, then there is the oil you have to use and the consumption, service intervals also come to mind.

E-Tech 250....No break in, Run it Like you stole it right out of the box on 87 Octane...(Recommended Fuel)...Three Years of Factory Warranty with the option to pick up another Four, Oil consumption lowered if programmed for XD-100, No Scheduled Dealer Maintenance For Three Years or Three HUNDRED Hours.........When you do have the E-Tec serviced at 3 years or 300 hours, you have the spark plugs changed, the gearlube changed and the fuel filter changed.....Then you are good for another Three Years or Three Hundred hours.

Now, I know this is the Rude boards but, why would you chose any other motor besides the E-Tec?

Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs (santee bass)

On bassboat applications, the 225 H.O. seems to be the superior choice. That's why I stated the 250 seems to be better suited to the larger boats. The H.O. lower unit is not really designed to push the 2500+ lb. boats all day.

Kenneth would take his prop back...

    Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs (RUSTY63)

He would not need my prop on a lead sled. It would be way too much pitch.

I am actually waiting to go against him in a tournament and then it will be reposession time the night before the tournament (while he is sleeping, of course).
I wonder how much he would pay me so he can fish a tournament? I hope you find me before blastoff time!!

Nahhh.....I can't do that. I like giving people information. Especially when I can show them top secret photos of the new Evinrude E-Tec 250 H.O.

    Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs

let me weigh in on this one a bit, since there is WAY too much misinformation going around...

    1) 2006 250XS runs on regular (87 octane) fuel

    http://www.mercurymarine.com/optimax_250xs3

    2) breakin on the Merc motors is keep you from BABYING THE MOTOR!!! Merc wants you to break in the motor hard... Decal says to idle very little and run it hard (3/4+ throttle), while varying rpm every 2 min for first hour. For the following 3 hours, you should vary the rpms every 5 min with no rpm restrictiosn... Pretty simple! Plus, the 250XS comes with 1 hour of dyno break in from the factory before you even bolt it on the boat!

    3) Fuel consumption... the 250XS might burn a bit more, but that is because it is making more power.

    4) the 250XS (in 20" form) is allowed to spin a bunch more rpms than the BRP product

Finally, here's a question... is the ETEC 250 powerhead the same as an ETEC 225HO???

How do we always draw in the "merc guys" to the Rude boards? You don't see me posting over there.

    Re: 250 e-tec vs. 250 xs (RoddyRude)

Its the E-Tec, we start talking about it.....and they come running.

The 06 does not need premium Fuel....HUH, the 05 does.

Sorry for the misinformation guys, we sell Merc's but I dont keep up with what they are doing to catch the E-Tec.

There is a 5 hour break in, I think someone posted that....in 5 hours how far ahead would the E-Tec be???????
