Since the grips are the first thing installed on a rod, the 'right' way to do it is to strip all of the guides and reel seat and rebuild. There are other ways around it, but you're better off just getting the rod with a full grip to begin with.
okay, so I am not going to go that route! LOL......
The most economical way is to strip off the old grip and slide a full grip on from the butt. You'll have to arbor up the front end (reel seat end) under the grip because the hole will be too big since you slid it on backwards.
Nothing wrong with doing it that way - just not a "pure" method. LOTS of production rods have arbors under the grips.
Got to take it for what it is... you're changing the grip and not building a new rod.
Personally, if it's a old favorite, I'd go buy a $2 Salvation Army special and practice it once. Or scout the garbage cans at the landing. You can practice on one then you'd also learn a new skill.
or just pay someone to do it for you.
You could remove the split grip or sand it down and replace with a golf club grip. I haven't tried it yet but I have seen articles about doing that. Kind of like the American Rod Smith rods. You can build up the blank with masking tape. I've had to do that on a couple of rods I built.
I have the grip just haven't had time to try doing it yet.
Why do people fish, some say people fish to get fish, this is obviously false
