    guide wrapping problem

I've been playing around with the locking wrap on the spinning rod I'm making. The first two guides came out looking really good, but the third has a gap in the thread just above the guide. I even tried making a few more turns before making the lock, but I just can't figure out why I can't get rid of this gap. I'm definitely doing something wrong. Any ideas?

Well, I went ahead and put on another guide the same exact way, and it came out fine. That makes three out of four that came out right. All were done the same way. I'm thinking maybe I'll take the one guide off and see if there is a difference in the foot or something.

spaces are pretty common like that when using a locking wrap - if you do them just right, you can get the thread to lay up tighter. It's more obvious with light thread on a dark blank and vice versa.

Most folks would never even notice that space with finish on it.

How important is a locking wrap on a single footed guide?

I never wrap a single foot guide without a locking wrap. I use the Rich Forhan wrap. It is easy to do and helps keep the guide from pulling out. The tube type rod holders in bass boats are very hard on the single foot guides. The tubes can pull the guide out when removing the rod from the holder. I use 3 wraps on guides size 6 and up. I use 1 or 2 wraps on micros.

on bigger spinning guides, you can try doing 1 or 2 wraps behind the guide before doing the locking wraps. Pack those first 2 wraps as tight as you can before doing the locks.

typically i just wrap up the foot as high as i can and then do the locking wraps. each locking wrap i pack the the thread directly behind the guide carefully with a dull edge of my razor to eliminate the gap.

yeah just put one blocking wrap behind the guide before any locking wraps and pack them all.
