    Gearcase Rebuild Break-in Questions

Just had the gearcase on my 2004 225h.o rebuilt with a new Prop shaft, pinion gear, forward gear and seals.Dealer told me to do the break-in like it was a new motor.Just wanted to ask the Experts if there are any special things I need to do.Was told to change lower unit lube between 5 and 10 hours. Thanks for any replies.

Re: Gearcase Rebuild Break-in Questions (beaveflipper)

Follow the Dealers advice you need to break it in just like a motor. The gears need to mesh and be happy with each other. To do this you need to start slow and be patient, first hour on the H20 just idle around, 2-5 hours Idle and pick up speed and pop on plane the 3-5 hour mark and vary RPM, But No WOT runs. After 5 hours occasional WOT with throttle changes every 2-4 minutes and after 20 hours have the LU inspected and drained and re-filled. Have the shift throw checked. Your LU should last a good long time if broke in properly!
