    Paint stripper

How are you guys removing the old finish before repainting cranks, particularly textured baits like Tom's white crappie in the color recipe thread? I would also be interested in how to strip the paint from reel bodies/frames if the method differs. Thanks.

No need to strip! Only bait's I'll strip are chrome traps. (Just because it like's to flake off bad).. Just skuff the bait's with fine sandpaper. (give's primer something to grab on to). Then clean bait with denatured alcohol to get all the fuzz off. Dry and spray with krylon satin white primer. Make sure to get the one made for plastic's!! It eat's it's way into the bait and gives you a good surface to paint on.

I removed the factory finish on the Lucky I painted in the demo. The finish on these baits comes off super easy with a little lacquer thinner. The trick is not to let it sit on the bait very long. I apply it with a brush very thinly and wipe it off immediately. The finish will peel off like an old sunburn. I then use adhesion promoter before I start painting. A plastic primer will probably work just as well.

I use Dupli-Color. They all work pretty much the same way, they have a lacquer base with a little solvent in them to soften the plastic briefly so a really firm bond is formed. It's important to use it very lightly, as too heavy a coat can cause softening of molded in details. I just give it a light mist, and then let them sit for a while to make sure the plastic has firmed back up.
