    Wanting to start painting crankbaits

I would like to start painting crankbaits and need some help. I just want to do it for fun not profit. Could someone suggest what I need to get started? I noticed on ebay a kit with an aerosol can, will that work? Also, what paint, clear coat, etc to do the job right. Thanks for your hlep in advance.

I would go with a cheap airbrush from ebay or airbrush city and stay away from the cans. Any type of air compressor will work for you. I would suggest createx water based paint sets. They are cheap, easy to clean up and come in a lot of colors. For top coat Devcon 2 ton, Envirotex lite are easy to use and make a decent finish. If you have any questions shoot me an IM. I'll do my best to answer them.

Just beware, it is very addicting once you start. Have fun!!!

Re: Wanting to start painting crankbaits (whoza_daddy)

I took a lot of advice from guys around here. I bought a small 2 gallon air compressor and an airbrush from Harbor Freight for $15.00. The one thing i've noticed about my airbrush is that it will not shoot really fine lines and i've tinkered with it quite a bit. Im painting spinnerbaits mostly, so you can imagine a little more control is needed. I will be buying a new gun in the future, but it's perfect for the lager baits! Do a lot of reading, these guys are a wealth of knowledge. Im not much ahead of you as i've only painted a couple baits, so just dive in!

Can't wait just struggling on what to purchase and what I need to get started. I am thinking about a Paasche double action but not sure what it means with the needles and gravity feed issues. Any ideas?
    Thanks

A paasche vl1 is a good brush, needles in paasche's come in 3 different sizes and regulate the amount of paint coming out of the brush...a #1 shoots the finest line and #3 medium tip #5 large tip, that being said you cant just pop the #1 in and expect to paint a hairline with craft paint the paint has to be the right consistency to flow right with a #1, to thick and nothing flows to thin and you'll get a hairline but with a thousand little droplets everywhere in overspray. Gravity feed vs siphon feed...for the most part on a siphon feed your sucking your paint out of a cup so not only does your air pressure work to spray the paint it also works to deliver it, on a gravity feed the paint flows from over (on top) the top of the needle so your air pressure only has to work to spray the paint
There are so many ifs ands or buts to this hobby the best teacher is to buy a brush and start spraying I've dabbled in this for about 8 years visited hundreds of airbrush forums and read some books and i am still learning new things everything I've read helped but until you put the brush in your hand.....

Is there any kind of paint out there that is ok to shoot out of an airbrush as is without thinning it down?

Also is their any kind of topcoat that can be sprayed out of an airbrush?

Yes but a good respirator and a booth is advisable, even with the waterbase paints I would wear a respirator.....createx auto air for example is supposed to be a safe alternative to lacquer but it contains silica's which once embedded into your lungs never goes away I tell guy's all the time I wouldnt spray ANYTHING without some type of protection....you only get 2 lungs and the words waterbase dont make it safe. Alot of topcoats can be sprayed depending on paint type and again alot of them are very harmful once you atomize them and float them in the air....

Bought a Paasche model at Hobby Lobby. I can tell this stuff will take time to perfect. What paint do you all recommend? I bought the stuff at HL in water base, seems to do ok but maybe clog some. What type of thinner do you use with water base? Thanks for all your help guys.

I use windex to thin Createx. I thin almost all the colors somewhat. If your brush is clogging a lot you may need to increase the pressure also.
