Anyone offer free shipping for rod blanks?

I'm looking at building a St. Croix rod (SC III or V) and was wondering if anyone knows where to buy rod blanks without paying $25 for shipping and "over size" package charges? After pricing an Avid blank, components, and adding the shipping charges from a couple of well known suppliers, I could have bought new Avid rods for about $20 LESS with an after Christmas sale than the build it myself price.

A number of places sell St. Croix rods with no shipping charge, so I would guess that the rod blanks also have enough of a mark up to make a good profit without the extra shipping.

Any suggestions?

You will NEVER save money building for yourself. I spend a lot more money on my rods than I ever would if I didnt build.

Scott is right. You wont save ANY money building for yourself.

You WILL be able to build what you want, with the components you choose, to your spec's, to fit your kind of fishing, and something to be proud of.


Dont build to try and save any $$$$$........wont happen.

shipping is killing all of us. especially st croix there is not much mark-up room on blanks. just enjoy your work and Im sure the componets you use far surpass the stock rod you could buyover the counter.
