Tachometer setting??

I have a 98' Sprint 207 PRO with a 98' 200 Vindicator on the back. I was having a feeling that my tach was off. im running a 27p Balistic prop and it will turn 5950 rpms....atleast thats what my tach was showing. i pulled the tachometer out of my dash last night and there was an adjustment knob on the back. its a teleflex tach. it was set on 5C..there are 4 other settings... 6C, 4C/2P , 6P , 8C/4P. anybody ever fooled with one like this before? thanks guys
