I would guess no. The hook rash is scratches in the clear. If the rash is not to bad you can lightly sand with 1000 grit and reclear the bait.

...I wish there were ....I bend the point of the trebles closest to the bait out some on my baits, it might help a little..

Depending on your bait and the type of finish, Threadmaster would be a good choice to recoat the bait if it has a gloss finish. It is tough and would look good if you applied it before it cut into the paint, beneath the clear coat.

You can get it at Anglers Workshop, Mudhole and other rod building suppliers.

    Good luck....george

Personally, I would be hesitant to add flexcoat or threadmaster to a crankbait. I would think that the extra weight would effect the action of the bait. I would suggest trying a spray urethane...they go on in thin coat's. Helmsman Spar Urethane would be my suggestion.

you could use a spray water cure clear or automotive product (ie: very thin coatings) to help some but there really isn't a solution. I just repainted a couple of LC Pointers that had some major hook rash (we all know they catch fish and hold up like crap). About all you can do is sand them as smooth as possible which depends on the original bait and coating, and repaint the bait. I have actually started pre-coating some baits that I know won't hold up well. But you have to make sure you use thin coatings unless you don't care about the action change.

Well...now I learned something today. I didn't think that a coat of Threadmaster would add that much weight to a bait...and affect the action. I appreciate the insight. Glad to know that I'm not the only person that has watched Lord of the Rings more than once!

I don't think the extra coat of clear is going to drastically effect the bait....if so no one would ever upgrade to bigger hooks, I keep a set of triple beams in my shop and weigh before and after painting, devcon would probably be the heaviest while the rod finish type clears are for the most part very thin and weight wise almost the same as moisture cured polyurethane. While ANY weight added to a bait will effect something maybe it might catch you a few more fish (aka..Tim Horton shaving the bills on fat free shads to reduce action) The only baits I've painted that you really need to watch are the suspending jerkbaits like the Ito visions they seem to be VERY touchy

...I know that trying to prevent hook rash on a LC Pointer I applied 3 coats of D2T and it lost its neutral buoyancy to a slow sinker....Two coats did not effect it

yeah suspending jerk baits is what I was referring to, as it is what I was in the process of painting. and to that point, i think suspending baits and epoxy coats are all you'd have to watch out for
