    Question for you rodbuilders.

With all the big name rod brands out there like Kistler, St. Croix, G Loomis and any other I have forgotten, is it possible to buy the same stuff they use to make their rods and make pretty much the same store bought rod at home? I was looking in a Mudhole catalog and it got me thinking. I'd really like to give rodbuilding a try at least once.

If you build the rod yourself you may be able to save a little money on it. I'm pretty sure you can buy all of the components that go into those other than the kistler. I don't know if you can buy a kistler blank or not but you can a st. croix and loomis. If done correctly you'll have a better performing rod than the one off the shelf too and have the opportunity to customize it to suit you personally. Obviously though mudhole and other vendors aren't going to give you the exact same pricing than those companies that are mass producing the rods so the cost savings would only be minimal at best. I'm starting to mess with this also and that's what I've seen thus far.

Paul, obviously Mud Hole and other companies that sell rod components do so on a retail basis but they also have a wholesale business if you can qualify usually all you need is a copy of your resale cert.or a tax exempt cert. depending on where you are located. As stated buying retail to build a rod you won't save an awful lot but buying whsle. you will save quite a bit so go get'em and have fun.
