As far as videos, the only one I have seen is the Flexcoat one. It is very cheesy but does a relatively good job at explaining the basics.

I think a kit is a good idea for your first build. You get the parts you need without having to sort through the bizillions of options out there. That can come later. I would get a bottle of color preserver and some extra rod finish. The kits come with the "bare minimum".
I made my wrapping tool out of scrap wood that looks like this one. I put the thread in a cup and run it through a book for tension. Simple, but it works. I've done a few "double diamond" wraps this way.

You'll also need an e-xacto knife, vis-a-vis (non-perm marker), 1/2" masking tape, and fine grit sandpaper (to dress out the guide feet).
Dale Clemmons "Advanced Custom Rod Building" book has more info than I need, but is easier to use than a CD or video.
Once you get the basics down, the possibilities are endless, and it's a whole lot of fun.
