    OMC vs Sierra parts question

Once fishing season is over my plan is to rebuild the carbs, install a set of Carson reeds and replace the water pump in my 88 XP 150.

Been browsing parts on a few different sites and was wondering if there was a huge difference in the quality between OMC and Sierra parts besides price.

My experiences with automotive parts was that OEM carb kits were far more complete and had more model specific pieces included in them than the aftermarket kits and if this is true with marine parts then I would prefer to get the better quality parts.

Same hold true for me with gaskets and such, I have no problem paying a few dollars more for better parts but if all things were equal of course I wouldn't mind saving a few dollars with aftermarket.

Are there any parts other than what comes in the OMC kit you would recommend replacing during a rebuild?

At 22 years old, the motor's fuel lines, fasteners, and filters should be inspected closely. Clean and test the recirculation valves, hoses, and fittings. Inspect the oil hoses and clamps, too.

I have tried a Sierra water pump kit once. It was a bad experience. Fortunately when it failed in less than an hour I was close to the ramp.

Re: OMC vs Sierra parts question (Laguna Freak)

Once I figured out how to properly install the kits, I was able to use both without problems on a 94 faststrike. However, I do think the OMC bowl gasket is a little bit thicker and perhaps has less stretch. I actually think the two bowl gaskets may be composed of different materials because I have seen the OMC gaskets shrink and become somewhat rigid in the trash pile whereas the Sierra gaskets did not. But who cares about what happens in the trash pile. I say purchase what your money can buy, they will both work.
