    Reworking old lures

I have bunch of old lures I would like to rework. New paint job, hooks, etc. I have a air brush which I have never used, but i need advice on sanding the old paint off, do you respray with a base primer and what kind of paint is best to use. Most of these baits are plastic. Any tips would be appreciated.

    Re: Reworking old lures (rustimus)

i do the same thing for a hobby...like i need more hobbys ...anyway what i do is first use Createx Paint.....i take and rough the surface up fairly good i dont nessarily take all the old stuff off unless its easy to come off....then i put a base coat down of opaque white then paint whatever color pattern i want it takes some pratice but its a lot of fun

you can get some good info on painting lures and so on at ,,,,tackleunderground.com

i buy most of my paint and airbrush supplies at ...dixieart.com
they have about the best price around

A scotch bright pad also works well to rough up the surface.

Createx is also a good paint to use as already mentioned.

I'm confused on one thing. I thought the surface of the lure has to be smooth before you paint it so it will come out smooth. Are you saying the surface needs to be rough?

you need to rough up the surface of the lure to get the base layre of paint to stick good then you can put the colors on
the Epoxy clear coat will get the finished lure all smooth and shiney and lookin good

Like Bobby said the scotch brite pad works really well for me, cuts down on any deep scratches you may get with a rough sandpaper

ky beautiful lures-not in my league-lol. Just want to kill some time in the shop away from the house-guess rewoking a bunch of ole lures can turn in to real work. Guess I'll give it a shot. Can you buy the eyes? I think I know how to get the scale effect.

yes they can be bought ...janns or barlows or bps, the painted ones are pretty simple tho you just use a paper punch for a template and then dot the second color with a round object

The scotch bright pad doesn't make the bait really rough. It just gives the surface a little "tooth" so the paint holds better.

I paint my baits eyes using the back side of drill bits and you can also do like Ky said.

I do know some people that use sign vinyl for eyes.

You can go to craft stores and they will have hole punches in different sizes, use a larger punch for the first dot and a smaller one for the pupil. The vinyl can be found at sign shops, and you can use the scrap they throw away.

If you can't find a sign shop you can also try using colored electrical tape but the sign vinyl works better.

    Ky is right.

Acrylic is a great place to start. You don’t need a lot of extra equipment and clean up is easy. I have never used Paasche brushes but from what I have read about them they are great starter brushes.

    Re: Reworking old lures (basscat22)

Basscat most are carved balsa some are repaints,I clear with a couple different kinds of epoxy depending on what Im making, your question on the end of the brush...I think your talking about a single action brush where you adjust your paint flow by moving the needle in and out were as the vl is a dual action and movement of the needle is controlled by the trigger making adjustments on the fly possible
Thanks for the compliments by the way
