    Rod building supplies...

About how much should I expect to spend in just gear to put together a rod?
I don't mean the blank, reel seat, guides, and cork, but everything else .....

Minimum while still having decent tools to make it much easier on me...

    Thanks for any input...
I'd just like to try building some rods over the summer...I'm WAY too bored during non fishing days

Nevermind...decided after doing a little research it is WAY too much just for a simple hobby

    Dave,
Its only expensive if you buy everything premade.................for about $5 worth of plywood you can make V block uprights to build on..................
you can make a drying motor setup for under $10..................

Granted if your not handy or on the lazy side buying a wrapper etc can get pricey in a hurry!

    ditto what russ said...

build your own V blocks and dryer and you are set. Buy a thread tensioner (not required, but nice), some epoxy and finish, some black thread...

you can easily be going for less than $50...

however it is adicting, so be prepared to spend $$$ building all of your own rods!!!

try home depot or lowes in the out door grill section. i made mine out of a motor out of an online chemical analyzer. got it from work for free. look for things that have slow turn motors in them.you can make all your needs. but if building fresh water rods. i think you can buy them way cheaper. that is unless you are making something different.

Thanks I am using a grill motor now but I would like to make two or three dryers for use in rod repairs. I will look on e-bay. I thought I saw some were 6 RPM motors at one of the rod component suppliers

    Re: (Captain Dan)

I prefer 6 rpms myself there quite easy to buy the motor for 10 or 12 bucks and put the rest together yourself.

    Re: (Captain Dan)

i may be out of line for saying this, but why not use a set of pulleys to step up or down to achieve the speed you need.

you can increase or decrease your speed by the way you set up you pulleys

large pulley on motor and small on turning shaft will increase your speed
or smaller pulley on the motor and larger on the shaft will decrease.

just trying to help, engineering is my thing, and if you need me to figure the pulleys for you to get exactly the speed you want then let me know.

    hope this helps

I bought a few things from REC . Outstanding service. Highly recommended.
The eyes and epoxy were top shelf. Quickly shipped. Sorry no website address,
someone should have it around here.
