    Walkign the dog

For what ever reason I stink at walking baits. What are the easiest baits to walk? I have tried zara spooks with limited success.

    Thanks

Spook for me, practice on calm water with a 6'6" mhf rod and keep a little slack in the line

Spooks are great, but try and get hold of a RI Vixen or Paycheck Repo Man if you can. I find they don't sit quite as low in the water and walk quite easily. Also, make sure you're leaving adequate slack in the line between each pull, and use either braid (50-65lb.) or a quality mono (I prefer 15-20lb. Big Game).

    Good luck!

You might try rubbing some candle wax on the first couple feet of line from the lure. This should help the line float out front which makes walking easier.

Go to a shorter rod. Easier on your arm and wrists, allows the spook to work better and gives you more control. I use a 6 ft. baitcasting rod.

Like someone said earlier, adequate slack in the line is the key. I always do two quick tugs while slowly reeling at the same time. The longer you wait between tugs, the more the nose of the bait will move from left to right or vice versa. I have never had any problems with spook but a spit'n image maybe a little easier for you to work. Good luck.

Another thing you might try is to quickly point your rod tip back at the bait after you give it a jerk. This will give you the slack in your line you need. I was told that when I started throwin a Spook and it made all the difference.

Best thing i ever did with a spook is not worry about it walking real purty. Instead I fish as fast as I possibly can and do a quick not so perfect walk. I guess it looks more unpredictible and they just react.
