    Worm fishing problem

Ive never had a problem with worm fishing....until now...

Last tuesday fished a jackpot. I lost at least 5 fish right at 4ish lbs. They would either come unbuttoned on the way back to the boat or roll them to the top and come off. I was using the same equipment I always have used: 6 8 Castaway rig rod, 17lb BPS excel, 3/8 oz weight pegged, BPS 3/0 straight shank hook.

My partner commented I might need a little stiffer rod. So, off to Falcon I go. I had a broken McClelland rod, took it back and swapped it for an Amistad. Also spooled on 20lb Seagar red label. Same hook and weight.

Thursday-Sunday I missed quite a few fish (probably 50 or more) but didnt roll them over or have them come unbuttoned. But, I was going through worms like a junkie on crack. Went through 8 packs of Ole Monsters. It didnt seem to matter how long the fish would take the worm, either Id get nothing back, half a worm, or the worm would be balled on the hook.

Anybody else experienced this severe of a issue worm fishing? If so, how did you fix it? Operator error? Pegged weight causing an issue? Change hooks? , Bigger hooks?

    Thanks

Say you use a 3/0 hook for an ole monster? That may be your problem.I fish at least a 5/0 hook when fishing an ole monster because of the shear size of the bait.Have recently went to the twist lock owner hook with a rubber stopper for the weight.Try it it may help

That's what I was thinking, whenever I use a 10 in. worm, I usually use the gamakatsu 6/0 EWG monsters.

Sounds like your on a school of dinks! Try a smaller worm or pinch an inch or two off the ole monster!......that just don't sound right does it!

I would step away from the BPS hooks as well. Biting the tails are either dinks are bluegill I would think.

Agreed on the BPS hooks, I used to bend them up on every other fish, get yourself some gamakatsu's EWG or if you set into them really hard the super line EWG's they are stronger. And the biting tails is most likely for sure either dinks or bluegills.

If you have redear in the lake they will bite a worm in half without getting the hook.

I use the 7/0 Owners with Ole Monsters. I shy away from the EWG with Ole Monsters because the bait is more slender than bulky.

Exactly I use I don't really like how long the gap from the eye to the first bend is though, kinda makes em hard to rig straight, or maybe I'm stupid

    Re: Worm fishing problem (Fiddlefarter)

I tried some 5/0 owners and it seemed to fix my issue.

    Thanks for the advice.
