From northern MN and I grew up witnessing this but not sure how or why it happens but.... the water turns over in the fall and then again in the spring, the water from the bottom of the lake moves to the top and the top water's settle to the bottom.
It's VERY evident in the spring because the ice melts from the shoreline first so you have a floating ice chunk in the middle, it then starts getting darker and darker as it honycombs and the water is absorbed into the ice like a sponge, the final event is - it DISAPPEARS!
Actually it sinks, or rather stays with the water as it flips. The closest I ever came to witnessing this was a matter of a few minutes. While puting docks and boat lifts back in I noticed a number of pontoons cruising and having to work their way around the ice pack and thought to myself "WHY ?", seemed like alot of effort navigating around this thing and risking a prop strike to boot, few minutes later I heard another one running wide open. Thinking someone was unaware of the ice I turned to find NO ICE! I know it was still about a foot thick so it could not melt that fast.
Thats Crazy! and I understand that I just meant like what is the water temp when its considered to turn over is kinda what i meant!
There is not really a certain temperature that turn over happens. In the fall the water above the thermocline cools to a point that is becomes more dense (weighs more), than the water below it. The cooler more dense water sinks and the wamer less dense water will rise to the top.
Lipless Crank Baits
Spinner Baits
Buzz Baits
Double Fluke Rig
Swimming a white jig around boat docks
Shallow Running Crank Baits
I'm trying to imitate Bluegills and Shad or Bluebacks here and when I do it's a 40 fish day usually. They group up and compete to eat which is a blast. Caught doubles on a number of baits. It's my favorite time of year to fish for certain!!![]()

alright sweet....thank you much!! Soo when the water turns over eventually am I gonna see on my graph the water will be distinctly warmer?? or no??
No, it'll be cooler and will no longer be "stratified" which means separated by temperature zones. This gives the fish the ability to use the entire water column without compromising their oxygen levels which is where your graph comes in.
Use your graph to determine what depth the fish are in and throw baits that work in that depth zone. You may see no fish which can be misleading but if you know they are there, they may be "belly to the bottom" and you can't see them on the graph you have to gamble some and drag bottom bouncers (jigs, shakey heads, big worms, etc) to see if you can get a bite. If you do and they are laying on the bottom and you fire up a school, your graph will light up like a video game all of the sudden and that's when you put that lipless bait you were asking about down there in them as they will be competing for food and then my man, it's GAME ON!
