    wacky rig hook set

I have been fishing with the wacky rig for about 2 months now and I can only hook up on about only 25% of my bites. Is there a certain type of hook set that I should be doing? waiting a little longer?(which ive tried)

I just reel up the slack if any and set the hook. I don't think you need to use a reel powerful hook set. My friend uses a powerful hook set and i see him miss a lot of fish. Also there is a lot of different hooks for wacky rigging. Try different ones to you find the style you like.

I don't really "set" the hook on a wacky rig, just reel down and pull the hook into the fish. I've been using a big octopus hook, I think a 2/0 Hookerz, that seems to work pretty well.

Finding the right hook will make a big difference... I like too reel up the slack and set it slow let the hook do the work...

Yeah you definitely want to use a pull set when wacky rigging. Let me rephrase that just a reel set like everyone said before you want to reel in the slack and raise slowly with the rod. I use a Powell spinning rod 7' medium action, xfast tip. the rod has a nice tip on it and has done well for me with wacky rigs. For line I use 8 lb flurocarbon line. If you are in super clear water, or you want to get the rig deeper try 6lb fluro, but the 8lb has worked well for me even in clear water lakes. The reel I use is an abu garcia soron stx 40.

I used a lot of different hooks, but the one i like best is a 2/0 straight shank hook, with the hook point exposed. I even fish it around grass. You'll be surprised at how seldom you hang up and how few hook sets you miss. As said above, no need for a hard hookset with an open hook, just take up slack and start reeling fast.
