I use a jerkbait like a rouge or lucky craft 78 on 8lb green mono or 5/16oz eakins jig and craw on 10 lb seaguar. Depending on the type of lake, 10' would be a good start.Look for vertical banks and rocks

not so much a larger bait. here in ky, we down size, not real small, but smaller than what we would throw in warm summer water. we throw jigs, with all different types of presentation. i have caught fish where they like it to sit a while, ive had days where i just hop it. you have to find what the fish want on a certain day. a good bait to try on your flats and points down there. are silver buddies. cast out. let them sink to bottom. jerk rod tip up, till u feel it vibrate, then let it sink again, keep repeating it. watch ur line, u will see them hit it on the way down after a jerk, or sometimes you will just pull up and they will be on. little tip. dont set the hook reel hard on these silver buddies. they have been known to just pull out. a lot of times i just start reeling when i feel a fish..

I agree with everything said and I'll add try a shakey head. If you have to go deeper with it then go heavier. I'll go up to a 1/4 oz if I'm fishing deeper than about 20ft. Also if fishing jigs or plastics and the fish are deep then it'll be better to use lighter line because the bait will get down faster with the smaller diameter. Or use 10-12lb braid with a flouro leader.

try blade baits, you can actually cover a lot of water with them, the once you find the fish. stick with it or switch over to a jig or drop shot.

i've been throwing nothing but blades lately and catching lots of fish.

It's eleven below zero here today, I'd try topwaters but I don't know if they could fight through 18" of ice....so I'm absolutely NO help
