    Palomar knot for drop shot?

Did my first serious fishing with a drop shot rig yesterday and got some good action but encountered a big problem. Out of 5 good bites I broke two off on the hookset. I'm using 10lb Pline, wetting the line and cinching it slow...I use the palomat knot on every other lure and don't have a problem with knot strength. Should I use a different knot or am I just setting the hook to hard?

You can't rule out the knot, but I would guess it's the hookset. I've had good results with a light/medium sweeping set for a drop shot rig. Those little hooks are sharp and it doesn't take much to set it. I use 8 lb. flourocarbon line with a palomar knot and haven't had a problem.

make sure your not snapping the hookset you jsut want to load into the rod and start reeling.........with the small wire needle point hooks you dont need a hard hook set

were you using flourocarbon line? i had the sme problem, and went back to mono. i talked with others that had the same problem. do keep in mind that drop shot fish generally hook themselves, and a hard hookset is not needed.

Got it...did some fishing today and got a couple on the dropshot. I was just setting the hook like I do with most of my plastics and it was way to hard for dropshots. Thanks for the help!

    Jlong,

I use a palomar knot for tying on my drop shot hook but after tying it pass the tag end back through the hook eye from the top down so when you add your weight the knot holds the hook out straight.
