    bait ball fishing techniques

i was fishing a tidal river yesterday and came across a huge trail of small shad. it was like 100 yrds long. craziest thing i ever saw. my question is is it worth fishing such a large area of bait and what would you throw and where? i spent a while throwing just about everything with no luck. there were fish breaking but from what i saw it looked like gar. what do you think about this also what if any interactions do gar and bass have? can they live in the same areas together?

    thanks
    sean
