"Walking" a topwater bait?? How do they do it??

Hey fellas, after seeing the BASS tx on tv today I was amazed how fast some of those guys could "walk" their topwater baits!! Can any of you guys who are real good at it give any tips to help out us novices?? (The only way I seem to be able to do it is by using the reel handle in 1/2 turn bursts..)

You can move the bigger baits faster, though it's not always the best presentation. Big sammies, super spooks, and pencile popers have more weight than smaller topwaters and make there movements quicker. Like everything, what worked yesterday might not work tomarow. Some days a fast retrieve is best sometimes a slower one. One thing I have learned is that if a fish misses the bait 99 times out of 100 it missed on purpose and if you kill the bait then more often than not they won't try again. If you have one miss rather than slow down or stop you retreive, speed up slightly. I have made a realy long cast with a spook and had fish chase it all the way back to the boat befor they committed on it. Spots especialy like to do this. If you try to play keepaway with them they'll win (catche the bait) most of the time.

i agree with the above posts, although there are times that i will stop the bait all together after a blowup, and they will hit it again after pausing for about 30 seconds or so. one other thing that works well for me, i keep a 5 inch senko rigged wacky style when fishing topwater. if they keep missing the bait, i will toss it out and let it drop in the same area. about half the time they will hit it.

I can relate to your frustration

It took me a LONG time in order to teach myself how to "walk the dog" two things that changed my learning curve was 14-16lb MONO (BIG GAME) a Medium action rod.

I tied on a Reaction Inovations Topwater bait, it is very heavy and really walks easily.

Throw it out and pop the line, the bait goes one way right as the bait gets close to its furthest point in the arc ( pop the line again (the wrist action is alomst the same as jerkbaits) the bait goes to the other side keep up the cadence. Practice with good long arches from side to side. Once you get this down you can speed it up some so your arches are shorter in distance. The next step is bait fluttering moving the bait very fast and popping it out fo the water like an injured minnow (I am still working on getting this down) When you see guys great at topwaters it looks just like a bait fish fleeing!

After getting the technique down on the Reaction Inovations topwater I was able to quickly adapt to spooks and other topwater baits.

Yea thanks Zipp!! Turning the reel handle and twitching the rod at the same time seems to be my biggest problem.. Just getting it down so Im not taking up too much slack, or leaving too much, is the hard part so far.. I can "sorta" walk it, but as you said, when you see the pro's do it, it's amazing!! I got more interested in it after seeing last weeks BASS on Clarks Hill in Ga.. They were "workin" those large pencil poppers!!! They look just like a baitfish when it's being chased by schoolers.. Awesome!!

I will agree with everything posted but I noticed one thing that could have been mentioned about the rod............Soft tip. Some rods in Medium action are too stiff on top section...using a moderate action can be different action than a x-fast. The one rod I use is actually a ML rod that has a fast action.....this allowes me to work the bait a little softer without poping it too hard yet the ML has enought power to hold most fish.........now the rod is actually rated for Light power but is a 3 power which tells me its more like a ML than a Light.........I've landed 8 to 10 pound Wipers with no problems so I guess I'm OK with that.......not saying you or anyone else would like that but seem to work for me.

    Just another option and Opinion
