    Fluke Fishing

Was watching bass bust shad on the surface the other day at a local lake. I was getting hit a little on poppers a bit more on Pointers pulled through the shad school. I was wondering if flukes would be a more efective bait to throw right into that school. I bought some Zoom flukes in rainbow shad color. What is the most effective rigging technique and rod for this presentation? Would they be effective in this situation?

    Thanks,

Flukes would work but would not be my first choice. The bigger fish are generally at the bottom of the school. I would have stayed with the pointer or go to a rattle trap, or maybe a jigging spoon. White jigs work well too. Important to match the size and color of the bait.

What lake were you on? A lead head swim bait can also work well. Curt

It was up at Berryessa at the north end of the lake. Don't get me wrong, I was getting plenty of fish on the Pointers. Just wondering how to rig up flukes 'cause I'd like to know how to fish them.

I like the gammy G lock hooks for the flukes. They seem to hold the bait on the hook a little better.

You can also find some weighted G locks and EWG hooks at landbigfish.com.

    Re: Fluke Fishing (santeerangerman)

I rig it with a #2 Gama offset worm straight bend like a Texas rig run it thru the center of the fluke only about an 1/8'' then thru the belly flaps up thru the back where it just barely penetrates the spine. You can run a nail up in it to weight it down if you want it to sink faster or just jerk the rod tip as you reel to get it to skip like the shad do when they are moving. Let them take it till you actually feel them then set it. Good luck I have been very successful with this technique.

what about the bait aaron martens used in the classic a few years back... I believe it was called a sworming hornet... sort of like a fluke with a small spinnerbait blade on it.
