I've had incredible luck on smallies with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Smallies seem to eat them up both daytime and at night. Some of my biggest smallies were caught on spinnerbaits. The only problem I seem to have is they really destroy the bait. What are you trying to figure out?
i have heard of the burning of cht and white blades but have never caught a fish doing this.my resevoirs are not all that clear and are rocky. i have had much better luck on cranks and jerks. my question is where and how are you fishing your blades? slo rolling?burning? pumping?....?
For smallies, try switching to a Chartreuse with Chartreuse blades tandem willows and see if it improves

Come on Neil; they work great on Brownlee!
Especially on windy, overcast days... Last August we were throwing smaller (1/4 oz) white spinnerbaits up against the rocks on steep banks and reeling the baits back medium fast. The smallies were hammering them pretty good; we caught quite a few small fish, but all of my better fish came on the spinnerbaits too. Plus we caught 4 or 5 largemouth in the course of the days fishing. I have done well throwing bigger baits (1/2 oz) on ocassion too; try baitfish colors, bright chartreuse, white/chartreuse, white with white blades.
strange how two people can have such different experiences on the same water. i maybe have caught a dozen smallies on brownlee in my life on blades and none of them
would have gone more than 2#s.
by the way are you getting the bug to get out there?
Yeah, I was off work on Friday and the sunshine was hard to take. I friend and I hit C.J. Strike 2 weeks ago, caught some perch & crappies, but no bass before we got blown off the reservoir. Last year we were on brownlee several times in February, expect to be there again this year. I am trying to sell my Tracker right now, I have a new boat coming in 5 - 6 weeks. I think the important thing for spinnerbaits on Brownlee is to catch the smallies when they are active and fairly close to shore. I have caught a few doing the deep slow-rolling 1 oz. spinnerbaits, but it is tough fishing.
It is an Xpress x-19 with a 200 HPDI; dual console and all the good tournament stuff. It may not be a Ranger, but it will be considerably faster than the Tracker Jet.
More on spinnerbaits: people were catching bass before and during the Snow Bowl at C.J. Strike on shallow rocks, both smallmouths and largemouths. I saw a couple 3 - 3.5 lbs smallies caught on spinnerbaits. They were pitching up onto the rockpiles and working the spinnerbaits out just fast enough to keep the blades spinning.
The week after the Snow Bowl I caught a smallmouth between 5.5 and 6 lbs. on Strike, but is was on a drop shot. Too bad I couldn't find it during the Snow Bowl.
i just now got back from the river (melba) caught 2 it is time to fish!!
You fished the slow deep section by Celibration Park?
I've had good luck at night with spinnys and smalljaw....I cast to bluff walls on Cumberland and Dale Hollow, pull some line immediately when the bait hits the water so it falls straight down, and let it "helicopter " slowly so I can feel the blade turn....when they hit it they mean business. I never use spinny baits daytime for smalljaw...I might be missing some action....
