    Redneck ingenuity

I had noticed some stains on my transom & a couple of splits in the trim that covers the top of the splashwell. The last time I took the motor off the boat, I used the forklift at work & thinking that I had possible water damage in the transom, that wasn't an option because of time. I started thinking about doing it in my shed & with the help of a coworker's idea I came up with a way to get it done. BTW, no water damage was found, everything is in good shape.

Several years ago I replaced my jack plate, I made a motor stand out of 2X4s that fits under the cavitation plate. I have a 225 Johnson, sure it would work on most motors. Still have it in storage if anyone would want to use it. Used the tongue jack to lift the motor.

    Re: Redneck ingenuity (BUZZMEUP)

I made a new transom top trim piece today out of stainless.

I have to buy some black 4200 & re-seal everything up.

Greg, You can ratchet them in both directions it is just a little slower than chain fall. I didn't lift it up very high & the rear strap is pulling back. I can loosen up that one & then the other two I have to loosen about 8-10 clicks & it should be at the correct level.

Don, I'm going to use Starbrite below waterline sealer, actually. I have white but want black for this job.

I think you did a fine job Brett!

I tried the chain hoist method. Went into the attic and installed extra 2x6 boards for braces....mounted the chain hoist to a joist....cut a hole in the garage ceiling to drop the chains through......

Then realized my transome was too wide to come through the garage door....

    Re: Redneck ingenuity (keitht)

Update. I was out in my shed mocking up trim piece & JP today after work. I noticed a line of water on the transom & first thought it was sweat from me. I looked closer & saw that the bottom bolts in the transom were weeping water. I pulled the bolts & sure enough the bolt holes were wet. I left a fan blowing on it from 5:00pm & when I went to check just now, it's dry & solid. I left the fan blowing on it just for good measure & will wait until Sunday or Monday to start the reassembly to make sure everything is dry.
