    Lake Chesdin

Hey guys, does anyone here have any knowledge of the lake? I have never been there and our club is fishing a tournament there on the 25th. Any info would be helpful...Is there a speed limit there? Is it safe to navigate? Anything else I should know?

I've heard that there is a 45 MPH speed limit, and that Chesterfield County is the one that enforces it. Not 100% sure though as I rarely go there, and I dont have to worry much about going over 45. The lower end of the lake is pretty safe, it starts to get a little hairy above the second set of power lines, and the river channel is worse. There used to be jugs marking the river channel that some locals put out.

I'll try and help you a little bit. As far as fishing goes I have never fished it this time of year. There is a speed limit of 45 but not sure if they really enforce it after labor day. I know before memorial day I have never seen anyone out there enforcing the speed limit. Navigational wise not too bad on the main lake some points come out into the lake just don't cut the points too close. The biggest thing is find a map and find cattle creek. Running up to cattle creek you will be fine but I wouldnot recommend going past there. This is where it starts to turn in to the river. Lots of stumps, lots of zigging and zagging to get up in the river. Once up there running it is not bad. I have heard the fishing is good up there if you can get up there. (again not sure this time of year.)

In my experience on Chesdin as was said earlier....below the power lines you will be fine. If you are going to go up above there a good gps unit with a card for the lake will show you the riverbed and as long as you follow that you will be ok. The riverbed does go back and forth across the lake so you will think you are drunk trying to navigate it but you have to have trust in that gps if you are going to do it because there are places that the riverbed is right beside the bank and there is 50-75 yards of what appears to be clear water away from the bank but it is all stump fields. Be careful and good luck. Chesdin can be a great place to fish and have fun.

Not sure about right now, but as recent as a couple weeks ago the lake was very low, getting to point where it is was difficult to launch a boat, not impossible, but starting to become an issue. I ate dinner at Chesdin landing and could not believe how low it was, I did not think it had been that dry. It was in the richmond times the lake was 24" low a while back. Don't know if any recent rains made a difference or not. With that said, if you do not know where you are going, I would not go past cattle creek, espcially if the lake is at all low. Otherwise, you'll be fine, the lake is otherwise deep, some points come out a bit as Brian said, but not too bad at all. fishing advice this time of year.....sorry, I only fish it in the spring....place can be tuff...but does have some hogs in it!

Ed it is 45 and they do enforce it...I have seen them on the water there as late as October. No help from me there as it kicks my ass so I stay away.
