    overheating crossflow j150stlcrd

    j150stlcrd

i have an 84 gt 150 that just recently lost water pressure from the pee tube , water does come out just not with any pressure (just a steady trickle) . i assumed it was time for a w/p so i installed a brp w/p kit. stll no pressure at the pee tube.
i started inspecting the old water pump and noticed that the inside of the housing were the cup goes in appeared to be melted i looked at the housing that i had before that one and popped the cup out and it looked melted too (ok so i am a pack rat). any idea on why it melted?

i can easily blow through the indicator hose if i disconnect it from the block (no blockage in line) but if i try to blow air back into the block through the hose it wont let much in
i put it on the hose today and let it run at idle and high idle for 15 -20 minutes and never saw any water coming from the outlet on the lower unit above the cavitation plate and still just a trickle from the pee tube

i backed it in the water just up to the cavitation plate so i could watch the water outlet and had the same results

i did notice that the left head (from the rear) was a cosiderable amount hotter than the one on the right i could hold my hand continueously on the right one but the left one only a few seconds.

i am ready to install t stats if that may be the problem just waiting on the words from the gods

    any opinions are greatly appreciated

Try this, disconnect at the block and retry it see if it is shooting out there, the new T-stats won't hurt thoug as they are 20 years old, may also want to see if you have H20 shooting out of one of the pop-it valves. CM

ok update time pulled the plastic 90 degree fitting out of the block and it had a small piece of wood lodged in it so cleared that out and it started peeing pulled out the stats and ran it on the hose(someone told me that would flush the system and installed the stats

seems to be working ok still no water from the hot water exit holes above the cavitation plate ( i let it idle for about ten mins on the hose this time)

any ideas on why the w/p housing melted around the cup

Melted pump housing, motor started without water??? I see alot of guys crank them before they get to the water to make sure they will start, once or twice wont hurt but, do it every time and you will hurt it.

i dont start it without water it almost looks like the cup was heated and then put into the housing to seal it on it isnt melted on the outside just the inside
