    Just did something stupid...

Just did something pretty stupid, but didn't really think about it until I got home.

I went to go fish the chick today, launching from rivers rest ramp. Well, as my luck would have it, just as I was turning into the rivers rest marina, the brakes in the dually went out. And I mean went out....pedal to the floor and the trailer brakes locked up. One of the metal lines blew out on the drivers front corner.

Funny thing is, it just passed inspection not 6 weeks ago. I guess they didn't do such a good job.

Well, all I could see at the time was a HUGE towing bill to get the dually and boat back home. So, I drove home very carefully instead. I would not have even attempted it if the dually had been an automatic tranny.

I know I pissed some people off, but I went no faster than 35 mph, and managed to get home safely with no mishaps or close calls. I definitely planned my stops tho, and took back roads and roads with low speed limits.

I maintained my speed low, and used 2nd and 1st gear for most of the stopping, and then the e-brake. 1st gear in the beast will slow ya down to a literal crawl.

Sometimes ya forget you are supposed to old & wise, and today was one of those days for me. Thank the good Lord I made it home safe and didn't hurt myself or anyone else. And yes, I did say a prayer in thanks when I got home and it hit me what could have happened.

Did almost the same thing at gaston last year, only the right rear break blew heading down to the ramp. was going to get it fix in roanoke rapids but everything was closed on sat. so i just powerbraked with 1st gear and drove home slow. was nt all that bad. but I was glad to get home.

Just think how stupid you would have felt if a child would have run out in front of you on one of those low speed roads.

With that said, we (a group of us) did the exact same thing one night.

Ran the car over an embankment, ripped a brake line, and still drove it home in time to park at the school (HIGH SCHOOL), and attend classes for the day.

STUPID!!!, and we were very lucky, but we were 17 and stupid

The same thing as if I had brakes...hit the ditch !

In that situation, normally it is faster to avoid by swerving than the try and stop, since if you tru and stop and lock up the tires, you have no control anymore.

Old man input, and from south of the border to boot

Your auto insurance will insure you for tow bills, cost on my policy is about 3 bux a year. I find it very worthwhile. Beats the pants off AAA insurance !! And REALLY beats paying a tow bill.

While you're there, get the rider that lets you drive a rental car anywhere w/o worrying about your PAI or whatever insurance. I think that's a buck a year.

I had similiar problem with one of my cars once. I had the insurance so towed the car home. However, I thought these new fancy dual cylinder brake systems were supposed to give you alternate brakes, IE the right front fails, you get the left front and the right rear. However, in my case, one hose broke and for sure, I had NONE. Apparently your situation was the same. Anybody got any input on what I thought was a safety system??

I REALLY feel stupid now, as I didn't even think about that. My insurance has towing, to where ever I want it to be fixed. Same goes for the boat, even tho it is with a different company.

I'm so use to not having coverage like that in the past, it didn't even cross my mind.
