Johnson 150 fast strike shutting down at take off

    1997 johnson fast strike 150
    model# j150gleuc

Idles fine. When trying to get on plane shutts off (dies). Happens when it reaches 1500-2000 rpms. Boat ran fine all weekend. Monday switch tanks and bulb went flat. Got back primed and worked fine till the way in the started surging from 4000-3000 rpms.

I have replaced the fuel bulb, but i don't know where to go from here. Like I said it will crank and idle fine but will shutt completely off when trying to get on plane.

Get rid of the anti-siphon valves in the tank and replace the selector switch and if you can replace the hoses from the tanks out. And from the selector to the motor. A water seperator between the tank and the motor would be a good thing too.

Tanks are located under the seats. where are the anti-siphon valves located? Boat is a ranger 461vs. Purchased a fuel water seperator today and will be installing.

You will have to follow the fuel lines back to the tanks from the selector switch. The barbs screw into the 90* at the tanks.

    Yep 3/8" ID.
Don't get new anti-siphon valves go to the plumbing department and get a straight barb Brass is best. Make sure you apply teflon tape to the threads.

Re: Johnson 150 fast strike shutting down at take off (ChampioNman)

Replaced anti-siphon valves with brass barb 3/8" and replaced fuel hoses from the tanks to the fuel tank switch. pumped all fuel out and replaced with new fuel and treated with marine stabil. Cleaned out fuel switch with an air hose.

Result---Boat jumped out of the hole planed off and got up to 5000rpms for about 5-10 seconds the started surging between 3500- 4500 rpms. Would go back to idle and take off and same thing.

Just seems like it is not maintaning enough fuel. Where to go from here?

Then next step is fuel pump but make sure your carbs are OK. If possible have a bud pump the primer bulb while you are running, if you stay running then you can rebuild the VRO/OMS. Or buy a new one.

Re: Johnson 150 fast strike shutting down at take off (ChampioNman)

We did this comming in on monday. (pumping the bulb) What is the VRO/OMS?

could there be something blocking the pickup in the tank itself. (Trash or dirt or something) I just bought the boat Friday so don't know a history on the motor.

You can remove the fuel pickups in the tank and check the screens for being clogged up. There is also a fuel filter behind the air box cover. It is white and screws into the vapor separtator tank, just be careful with the O ring, don't crush is when screwing the filter back in.
