    Best rates on rental car???

I'm getting ready to head to TX at the end of this month. Actually - 3 July. I'm towing my boat down, and after some careful gas calculations, I see that it is going to cost me about $500 or more in gas - one way. I have to return on August 5th for a little less than a month before I go on terminal leave. So now I'm thinking that instead of driving back, I'd fly back (about $400 round trip - returning to TX on September 2nd - permanantly).

But then I looked at Rental Car rates for the month.

Anyone have a better suggestion, or know of a place that will rent me a small (don't care what it looks like or has in it) car for a month???

    All the best,
    Glenn

Glen, I just towed my Stratos to Tulsa, Ok with my 05 Silverado and i'd have to say that your estimate on gas is a little light, I spent $500 going to Tulsa and I know it's several hours further to San Antonio...I'm no help on the rental car rates part though, i also investigated vehicle shipping, it's around 800 to ship a vehicle from OK to VA, there's another idea that might help you, just have the boat shipped down and save you a trip...

Budget and Hertz - about $800 without insurance. Insurance was an extra $24 per day (a little over $700 just for insurance for the month) So total - about $1500 a month for a compact with insurance.

For that price, I could BUY a beater, throw liability insurance on it for a month, and then sell it for half of what I paid for it when I'm ready to leave and still be ahead of what they charge (no, I don't want to do that. )

    All the best,
    Glenn

Also check Dollar rental cars....I was just looking at all the companies to rent a car when Lea & I get to Nashvile next month for the Champion dealers meeting...and Dollar was just a little bit better, rate wise.....just be sure to check the "bottom line price" after insurance, etc.

You dont need the insurance if your policy covers you when in a rental, most do but the rental car companies dont want you to know this. Call Budget and let them know what you are wanting to do and they can work with you, I just did a one way rental froim Miami back to Charlotte rate online was $380 I called and got it for $117.

Thanks for that link! My costs came out to $468.42 using that calculator, but it doesn't take into account that I'm towing a boat. I get about 15mpg without the boat, and 12mpg with the boat, so I'm probably going to be about $500 to $550 or a little more. That's fine with me. I was expecting that. It's the rental car rates that suprised me.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm going to keep looking at some of those options.

Jeremy - thanks for that tip. I'll call my insurance company to check.

    All the best,
    Glenn

My insurance (nationwide) has a rider for rental, it covers them just like your car. It's really cheap. I usually call the local rental group (enterprise) and get what I can as far as rates are concerned. They are better if you call way in advance. Closer you get to the date, more the $$ will be. Airport agencies seem to be better about rates. Also, priceline may help, you can bid on some real deals there.
