    Crankbaits

How the heck do you cast these on when they are so lite? I looked like a fish out of water on Saturday trying to cast one and it was not even windy. The weight of the one I was using was a 1/4 oz would moving to a different type that weighed more make it easier? Any thoughts folks...

With small light crankbaits you may have to use an open face spinning rod or something like a zebco 33. Small crankbaits relate to light line.

The ones I have are BPS XPS Nitro Crank Baits. I like the way the look and I have got a few nice fish with them but they only weigh a 1/4 of an ounce and it is difficult at best for me to cast. I thought maybe a different brand weighing more might help....

This may be a dumb solution but lighter line would help I would think.......? I throw 8lb on my CB's now and used to throw 12lb. Also I turn the spool to 1/2 free and throw it harder to minimize backlash and then adjust to whatever length I am throwing to. Hope this helps.....works for me.

Tried that minis the lighter line...have 12 lb on there now. Had a backlash on Saturday that took me 15 minutes to undo...

If your using a baitcaster, sounds like you need to adjust your spool tension on the center of the handle. Attach the lure you want to throw, depress the button to release the spool, adjust your spool tension knob until the lure falls freely to the ground, adjust the tension so that when the lure hits the ground the spool will stop turning, then you should be set. It might help to use 8-10lb test on a 6'6" medium rod.

Did that as well the night before like I do with all my baits and such. Problem lies with it being lite in weight and not casting well becuause of that. Will try the lighter line idea as well, as now I have 12 lb on there.

Also Izorline would be better for ya if you dont already have it spooled on. It has no line memory and seems to cast better in my opinion.

I have that new Trilene Fluoro Pro line on my reels now and am not seing a noticeable difference, may just go back to mono line sure is cheaper. The stuff sucks on my spinning gear big time...

Does you rod show the weight range for the lures to be used? If 1/4 ounce is at the lower end, it just may be difficult and larger baits may be required. Also I was having a similar problem with one of my rods/reels and after my son looked at it he said the internal magnet control was on. I always just used the outside knob to adjust for wind, bait weight, etc. After changing that it freed the spool up. Just a couple of ideas.

The brakes and tension knob are good to go and were the first things I checked. Never thought about the weight range of the rod, you may have solved the problem...

Just checked the rod website and weight ranges for my crankbait rod are 3/8 to 1 oz, so I think you helped me nail the problem as the cranks I was using are all 1/4 oz. Thanks RedShad .

You might just have some badly made crank baits. I had some of those xps baits also, some were good some were bad and all the same lure. I got sick of them and threw them out. Some baits just don't cast as good as others.

I agree with RedShad, although everyone makes a good point about tension settings and line choice. I was having the same problem with the lighter baits until I switched to a lighter rod. Same reel, same line, but the rod made a world of difference.

I had a hard time with ligth crank baits. Tried lighter line, didnt help switched reels havent had a problem since. The Shimano Chronarch mG throw ligth stuf very easy if adjusted right. Dont know if a 269.00 switch is worth it just to throw light crank baits.
