My dad used exclusively lightning rods until he started getting my hand me downs, they are a decent rod and a re a steal for the $$ but I think you will find when you step up in rod class and go to technique specific rods that they are much nicer. He now uses higher end rods and really enjoys the sensitivity they provide.
I use Loomis, St. Croix, All Star, Skeet's, Dobyns, Kistler, Quarrow, Airrus and Customs. I don't use just one brand rather I pick the best rod ot fit my needs no matter the maker.
Man I have them all....
all-star and loomis are my man rods.
but I have a buddy that builds rods now. So im weeding out my stuff for him to build for me....
anybody want anything built let me know

Speaking of technique specific, which is the most important specific rod to start with? cranking, worm, jig, etc?
That would depend entirely upon which tactics you rely on the most.
Kistler, Castaway, Shimano Crucial, Skeet custom on the way

I agree with Greg for the most part it depends on what you use most. But also I believe a good cranking specific rod will increase your ability to catch fish with a crank more than other technique specific rod.
I am do not lock myself into one style. Lately Ive been cranking. As the weather warms spinnerbaits, then worm and senko fishing mostly
What do I need to look for in a good crank rod. I know some makers say this is a cranking rod rod others do not. Usually when I crank it is in shallow water 1-8". MH? M? ML? not sure what a tip is... not sure what fast action is.
Cranking rods are best when they are either a glass rod or made from a graphite rod with a parabolic blank. I think you will always be better with a 7ft cranking rod and if you were to only buy one I would say a M action will be the most versatile. I have a 6'6" M a 6'6" MH a 7' M and a 7'MH. You do not want a rod with a fast tip this will cause the rod to load up to quickly and not allow the fish to have the bait well before you pull tight. Also the parabolic blank and glass rod will flex through out the rod keeping you from pulling the treble hooks loose.
How can you know that a rod is parabolic? Never seen that word before when looking at rod. Maybe it is because I am not looking at the right type of rod.
THe parabolic Graphite will be harder to find and identify very few rod makers use a true parabolic blank. I had mine custom made. The best way to go for you is most likely buy a glass cranking rod. BPS makes a farily cheap one that will be a good start for you.
