    4 Stroke on a 1991 sabre

Any one had any experience doing this. I have a solid 1991 sabre that I use as a second boat. Still original 175 Evinrude Intruder just pondering the thought of a new motor. I know the cost just looking to see if anyone has done this or maybe to a similar rig.

Buddy of mine just repowered an older 19’ Stratos with a 200 ProXS 4s. He had a 200 EFI on it and was always worrying about getting stranded a long way from the ramp. He no longer has to worry about that and now he says he has significantly greater range due to the increased fuel efficiency.

Older Stratos here. Went with a 4 stroke Suzuki 200 because hull was rated 200 and the price was best. It'll only do low 60's, but it so far has always gotten me back. That's what I care about.

Depends on the weight of the 4S. I had an 89 Sabre, started with a 150XR6 (~405lbs) and then ended up putting a 150HPDI (~475lbs) on it. The ass sat a lot lower in the water with the HPDI...honestly too low for me if I had a big passenger. Looked up the Intruder and it's 394lbs. Also ran faster with the XR6, not sure if that was the weight or if the XR6 was just a stronger motor. The XR6 was pre-mix though and I had it propped to run ~5900 RPM which is over the 5600 max recommended.

We like those motors and they tend to have longevity. Because of the VRO system, we do like to run oil in the fuel. At some point in time the system will fail. Some vacate the system and run on 50:1 premix, which is fine but we like the extra oil around 40:1 for longer life.

It's a back up and we would not put a new engine on if it were ours. Of course that is an engine we have a history knowing they last also. The gearcases are plentiful and even then only fail after an impact in most situations.

For those concerned about weight, a couple of lithium batteries would offset the weight difference. That’s the direction I will go if my 2-stroke Pro XS bites the dust.

Yes the VRO was taking off before I got the boat and I do the mix a tad richer than the 50:1. I have had the boat for many years and it is good solid fishing platform. It it is a second boat for me and used a incognito boat and in between boat sales. It has logged a lot of miles and even used it the Opens and the Toyotas several times. It does well for me, just takes awhile to start for the first time if it has set several months, but after the initial hard start problem. It just keeps on going as the pink rabbit does.
