The James has really improved this year from the hurricanes of several years ago. The Chickahominy off of the James was really good this year as well. The Pamunkey river offers both lm and sm bass and in fact, several of us are fishing it tomorrow. Are you coming out for a visit?

I moved to Gloucester 2 weeks ago from Utah and are trying to find some fresh water to fish close to home. I am going to try to fish Sunday or Monday. Where is a good place to put in at the Pamunkey? Thanks

BobShaw, I will need a 1hr head start to stay up with your boat. I guess it is not a problem running fast on the Chik and the Pumunkey.

Where is a good/safe place for a new guy to launch on the Pumunkey and fish and not run into anything with his boat?

Where are you in Gloucester? My folks bought a "pre-retirement" home on the Popopotank last year. We haven't done a lot of exploring around the area yet, but he has caught a few cats off his dock. I dropped my boat in at Tanyards Landing once. Ran the Poropotank with no problems, but the wind blowing in from the York kept us from venturing out too far.

One ramp on river, Williams Landing?, 5.00 ramp fee, its about 1 hour from Gloucester Ct. house area. These are general directions, take 17 n to I-64 w thru west point. After rest area take first exit, stop sign turn right. Go to next stop sign and proceed straight, narror road be careful, follow this road, you will pass over railroad tracks, appro. 2 miles on a straight stretch of road you will come to a old country store on left, no longer open, turn right onto rock road, there a sign for a hunt club there, cannot remember the name, duh, follow road straight to river it will bend hard to left, you will see ramp on right.

Check tide, out going is best, and at low water it gives you an idea where to not run. You really need to have someone show you around the river or just launch and start fishing. the coves you see at high water will be mud at low.

    Good luck

    Re: York or James (BUZZMEUP)

    Welcome to VA, Mike!

I agree with Buzzmeup. You should not try to run that river unless you first have someone who knows it, show you. Additional point....at the ramp, as you face the river, the ramp on the left of the dock is longer than the one on the right. Low tide can be a challenge launching/retrieving on both sides if you are not careful.

I-64. Take the Roxbury exit. Follow Old Church road for approx 8 miles. You will see an old store on the left and a gravel road on the right. Turn right and ollow the gravel road until you come to the old ramp. Along the way, you will pass Waterloo Hunt Club.

We caught a few nice fish today...
