Son going to College in MN.

My son will be going to college in Minnesota starting in August. I have a few questions from the "experienced" BBC crowd since this is our first out of state college bound child. Our daughter is going to college locally. He recieved a partial scholarship to St John's University to play football and to get an education, and we will be driving up, up, up there with 2 vehicles, his and our rental. What do i do with car insurance? He is on my policy and his car registration is in my name. Do I need to put it all in his name now? Or do I just leave him on my policy? Does Minnesota require college students to register their vehicles there?
When my son got the offer I told him when the door of opportunity opens, he needs to walk through it. So he picked Minnesota. I know it will be a shock for him since it is so far away and we have been getting him some warm clothes to prep him for the weather change.
    Thanks for any info.

It seems the car is your car being registered in your name. And he is on your policy as a driver. Maybe just let him use your car, but I would call your insurance and tell them the whole deal and what they want.

No changes that need to be made on your end. It's just like driving a car into another state. As long as he is still on your policy and insurance, you're good to go.

Congrats on the scholarship. That's exciting! Nothing more fun than traveling and watching your kid play sports at the next level.

Agreed. My son also went to college and grad school in MN. We gave him a car for college, which was still in our name and under our insurance. No hassle at all.

Winters are going to be an eye opener for him.

Oh, make sure that rental is insured. Wife just had a deer bounce off her rental, driving on an interstate highway near St. Louis 2 days ago. Our car policy covers it. I'd sure hate to pay that bill out of pocket.

As for the car you need to speak with your Ins. agent and see what they recommend. When we gave our daughter a car it was recommended to put the car and Ins. policy in her name, we did pay the premium.

Just leave the car in your name and make sure your son is added as a driver. I actually worked for an insurance company whose home office was in Minnesota for almost thirty years. As stated above check with your agent to make sure and make sure the rental car is covered. Congratulations and make sure he has plenty of thermals and warm clothes. My territory was in Alabama but I had to visit the home office on several occasions.

Your son picked a very good school and will have an excellent football experience while getting his education.

St John’s is located in a really nice area of Minnesota you will enjoy your visits up there and don’t be too upset if he wants to get a summer job up there.

He will be fine in the colder weather, Sept will be warm yet, he’ll acculate to cold just like every northern does. When he comes home for Christmas break he’ll be hot.

Hope he gets to drive a snowmobile, ice fish on the ice and in a castle, eat hot dish, and lefsa.;)

Insurance will likely just need to know he is a full time student going to school out of state. As far as residency he is still considered as a resident of your home as the out of state school is "temporary" just for school.

For clothes make sure he has a really, really, warm winter coat. temps can get into the -10 to - 20 range.

I hear electric block heaters are popular for vehicles up there also.

No need to register the vehicle in Minnesota unless he's a permanent resident - most college kids use their parents home address at least until they graduate so his 'official' residence will remain there. Might be a good thing to talk to your insurance agent just so they are aware he'll be living most of the year out of state, shouldn't be an issue but better to know for sure and not get surprised should he need to use the coverage.
As others have said that's a nice part of Minnesota, not far from St Cloud which of late has gotten a bad reputation. Keep in mind its still a relatively small town (100k population) so a lot of stuff gets blown out of proportion. Don't have to go too far from there to get very rural.
