    Battery size

I have a Interstate 27M-XHD cranking battery. It is 800cca 182 minutes reserve capacity. It is only a month old. Yesterday I fished a tournament and in 3-4 hours of only fishing, with 3 small graphs and 2 livewells running it was dead. Should I upgrade to a group 31 AGM or what is your recommendation? Thank you for your advice.

First thing I would do is try to return the old battery. It should have held up better than that.

Actually, the first thing I would do is check all my wiring and connections. Second thing is make sure my charger is working correctly. Then return the battery.

I'm not a fan of AGM batteries. I don't believe they are worth the premium over SLA. O'Reillys handles a good group 31 SLA. On sale sometimes for $100 or so. My personal opinion. No one will agree.

A good agm is more money than a lithium battery and is degrading every single time you discharge it especially if you EVER get below 50%.

Most chargers will charge a lithium its a no brainer if yours will or has a agm setting.

The benefit of a good AGM is that they are stable and simple. AGM's can run down to 30-40% without taking a big hit in longevity. The main issue is that there is only one good producer of a 31 series AGM and that is Enersys (Odyssey, Northstar, X2, old DieHard Plat, etc.).

Download this spreadsheet from Goodman Fishing to get an idea of how much battery that you need for now and in the future: 2024.10.21 - Battery_Calc-Share.xlsx - Google Drive. You will likely be better off splitting the fishfinders off to a separate lithium battery unless you can make it work with just a single group 31 or two group 27 agms in parallel. Lithiums tend to overheat stator-based charging systems, which is why I plan to go back to a group 24 or group 27 dual purpose battery (it came with a group 24 starter lead acid) for cranking and boat electrical and move all fishfinder and related electronics to lithium. For the time being, I pulled out my group 31 AGM for cranking/electronics and went to two group 24 deep cycle in parallel when those batteries got freed up from my trolling motor when those went to lithium.

Goodman is pretty active on here, and can provide some sound thoughts as an engineer.

Check the Manufacture date. Did you check battery voltage prior to purchase? Could have already been sulfated sitting on shelf.
Manufacter date and voltage are two of my major criterion, yes even pull all batteries off shelf to check voltage.

    Yes invest in a 31AGM, may i recommend https://www.odysseybattery.com/produ...ry-31-pc2150s/
    runs 2 Lowrance 12 's, Humminbird 12 AND 360,, PPs, Livewells,

Well. Y'all please don't run my Duracell size 31 AGM down. It's only 4 and I just charged it yesterday for the second time because my boat has been sitting 2 months because I got a new knee. Ouch.
It just keeps rolling along. A well spent $215.00.
