    Shimano Calais value?

I have a Shimano Calais 100(11 bearings) that I found at an estate sale. Never used, still wrapped and in box with felt bag. Any idea of worth? It looks, feels, and sounds very good. Thanks much.

If it's mint, I'd say around $250 for RH (which I assume it is as a "100" moniker) maybe $275 LH (101). The Calais 100A/Antares AR were awesome reels, the only drawback was a limited gear ratio of 5.8:1.

Also, the other consideration is the lack of support for parts since it's an older reel...still, it is a superb crankbait and moving baits reel for moderate speed IPTs.

Yeppers should be perfect for that. It is a bit hefty at about 8.5 oz, but if you are using say a 7'4"-7'6" cranking rod with a split grip rear, it will help balance out the rod. Also, the handle length is fairly short at 70 mm, so you may want to substitute a longer one in that 84mm + range.

The other strength of this reel is that it will easily and consistently cast 1/4 oz baits, even ones that aren't necessarily aerodynamic and dense, with the right rod and lighter line.

I have 3 that I use for cranking. My one piece of advice--get a larger reel handle. The stock handle (80mm?? or shorter?--been a minute) feels super short. A 90mm handle makes a ton of difference and you'll love it. I have a couple on CBR 845s and one on a Dobyns 805CB...
