    E25-B Johnson Electric trolling motor....polarity??

I have this Johnson electric trolling motor on my Lund, I assume it is an ealry 80's or so, model E25B, ser. H5388940 12volt. It has served me well for years and now I have a strange problem. It seems to have come about since it was hooked up to the battery backwards? It has virtually no power, no speed control.....I repaired a couple of loose ground wire connections at the foot control and top of the motor itself. It has 12 volts at the wires going down the tube. I have not pulled the lower unit apart yet but was wondering if it's possible the unit needs to be polarized?? It just seems strange that it worked fine last fall when I put it away (in a garage) for the winter!! How does the speed control work, it seems like such a small switch....about the size of a potentiameter. Does it limit voltage to the motor itself? Thanks for the help!

It is a potentiometer. There is also a capacitor that assist in the start up of the motor. Chances are when that was hooked up backward you blew it up. John Jones on the TM forum can assist you also.

Scroll down from the main page to the Electrical/Wiring/Trolling motor forum.
